Update: Steam has resolved this issue and you need to apply the latest Steam update.
Steam recently sent an update to its client which apparently caused some incompatibility issues between EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) and the New Worlds executable.

We understand that there are some issues with EAC and Steam that prevent players from accessing New World.
If you encounter this problem, we recommend reinstalling EAC or having your game file verified by Steam to fix the problem and get back into your game.

1. Open the New World application in your Steam library and go to Settings → Manage → Browse local files

2. Open the AntiCheat folder

Steam might very well temporarily roll back an update to fix the bug and re-release it at a later stage, but until then the workaround above seems to fix the problem. Special thanks to streamer Danotage for the Amazon Games approved quick fix.
