CHAMPIONSHIP TREES

The Great Ax Mastery Tree is split into two skill trees - The reaper and Mauler

reaper

The reaper's skill tree focuses on mobility and critical hits. Fee allows you to close gaps by moving 10m forward and dealing 130% weapon damage. When fully upgraded, Fee can deal more damage based on distance traveled and adds a skill shot. This increases the damage even more if you can right-click at the right time. Perform is another skill in the reaper's skill tree. Perform deals 30% more damage to enemies under 50%. Upgrading this skill will add Grit to the attack and also guarantee a critical hit if the target is below 30% health. Final Collect is a crowd control effect that adds self-healing and increases damage with upgrades. Collect also gives a nod to refueling as Collect is compatible with the Carnelian gem (taunt).

Passives in the reaper tree boost the abilities of the Great Axes. Death's Embrace gives a large damage boost, adding 10% armor penetration against enemies below 50%. Passive Crit increases the chance of a critical hit on targets below 50% health by 15%. These two passive skills combine well with Keen Edge, which increases the amount of critical damage dealt by 15%. Critical Gain and Feed provide a decent amount of self-healing with Critical Gain and target damage below 30% health.

The key passive in the reaper tree is Blood Lust. Bloodlust increases your movement speed 30% faster and deals 15% more damage to enemies within 15 yards. This passive is extremely powerful in PvP, allowing Great Ax users to track ranged opponents. Overall, Bloodlust should work well as a continuous single target damage boost.

Mauler

The Mauler Tree, or the spin-to-win tree, is full of crowd control and area damage. Whirlwind is a spinning attack that deals 50% weapon damage to all nearby enemies with each turn. This skill requires you to keep hitting the target to do the next spin. Can be upgraded to 7 turns (up from 5), increases skill attack speed by 50%, and increases damage by 30% if surrounded by 3 or more enemies. The Seriousness well is a ranged ability that allows you to place an area of effect on the ground that draws enemies to the center of the area for 3 seconds. At the end of 3 seconds, enemies in the area of effect take 100% weapon damage. The first upgrade to the Seriousness well increases the damage dealt to enemies by 10% for each enemy captured by the Well, while the second, Unrelenting, adds utility to skills by applying a 20% Fortification Boost to allies standing in the Well. The last skill in the Mauler skill tree is Vortex. Vortex is a fast spinning attack that pulls enemies towards you and deals 115% weapon damage. Vortex Upgrades increase attack / pull range, increase attack spins to 2, and allow all projectiles to be consumed while the ability is active.

Passives in the Mauler tree mainly focus on being surrounded by enemies and upgrading heavy attacks. Durable Strike gives you Boldness on all Heavy attacks and 20% damage reduction during animation. Heavy pulling allows them to pull enemies towards you. Seriousness upgrades all of your pull abilities to keep enemies 30% longer (including Seriousness well and Vortex). Spotlight gives a 10% increase in damage and crowd protection provides a 10% increase in armor, but both require being surrounded by 3 or more enemies.

The passive key in the Mauler tree is Mauler's Fury. This passive increases your damage by 5% with every attack with the Great Ax for 3 seconds, stacking up to 10 times. A whirlwind, especially against a large group of enemies, can give you a large amount of Maulers fury, greatly increasing the damage dealt.

Recommended roles and the allocation of Mastery Points

The skills recommended for the Big Ax will largely depend on what activity you participate in and what role you want to play.

Tank

Recommended active abilities

  • Collect
  • Seriousness well
  • Vortex (Fee)

Recommended passive skills

  • Feed
  • Frustration (critical gains if loading selected)
  • The Mauler determination
  • Heavy pulling
  • Sustained Impact
  • Seriousness
  • Crowd protection

Passive key

  • Mauler Fury (Bloodlust if Fee is selected)

Collect will be your taunt as it can both increase your aggro and pull enemies closer to your location. When upgraded, Collect can also provide a decent amount of self-healing. Combined with protection against forage and crowds, it provides good survivability combined with heavy armor. Seriousness well is another skill that you will adopt as a tank. Seriousness well has many tools that can help you stop mobs that are losing aggro, serve as a ranged pull, and provide you and your allies with a 20% fortification boost. The third skill will be the choice between Fee and Vortex. Fee allows you to attack a group of mobs, grabbing starting aggro and giving you extra mobility when required. The Vortex allows you to keep enemies close together, which allows your allies to attack groups of mobs more efficiently in area. The choice ultimately comes down to the situation you're in (mobility vs AOE) and what passive key you want (as it takes 10 points in the tree to unlock). Bloodlust can increase the mobility of bosses who require frequent movements. Mauler's Fury adds a stacking buff that glows when attacking multiple enemies.

DPS

  • Vortex
  • Perform

Recommended passive skills

  • Greed
  • The grip of death
  • Frustration
  • Keen Edge
  • Critical condition
  • Spotlight
  • Crowd control

Passive key

  • Mauler's fury

The Great Ax DPS provides players with the spin to win style of play that they know and love. Whirlwind is your primary damage dealing skill, and you'll use it most of the time after cooldown. The key to getting the most out of Whirlwind is a good tank that will be able to hold aggro and group your enemies together. A fully upgraded Whirlwind combined with Mauler's Fury can deal massive AoE damage. Perform is another slot ability. Fully upgraded Perform against targets below 30% guarantees a Critical Hit. Execution works well with Keen Edge and Death's grip, but when you use it with Mauler's Fury active stacks, you'll get one of the most striking abilities in the New World. To complete this feat, Great Ax users will want to use Perform immediately after using Whirlwind. The last skill recommended is Vortex. Vortex can help create whirlwinds, and each ability deals the third highest damage on cooldown. Fee could be switched to Vortex, but it's worth noting that if you choose Fee, you will most likely lose the ability to unlock Maulers' Fury. Bloodlust provides a more consistent damage buff in single-target situations, but is inferior to Mauler's Fury against multiple targets. Bloodlust also doesn't work so well with the Whirlwind, your primary damage dealing ability.

** Note - consider adjusting your passive skills to allow you to take the center of attention and crowd protection during sieges**

The Great Ax is great for tracking down and controlling enemies in PvP mode. Seriousness well places a vortex that can help pull your enemies wherever you choose, leaving you (and your team) vulnerable to damage. Fee gives you the ability to close the gap between ranged enemies and deals a lot of damage. Once in melee range, Collect can help keep your target close by providing you with a decent amount of self-healing. Passives in the Great Ax tree also work well in PvP, providing a significant increase in damage and survivability.
