The sword deals a combination of slash and thrust damage. The sword has a combination of three light attacks. Light sword attacks deal 100% Slash damage, and ending a combination of three Light Chain Attacks deals 105% Slash damage. Your heavy sword attack deals 120% thrust damage and your charged heavy attack deals 160% thrust damage.

You cannot attack with a shield with light or heavy attacks, but there are abilities that allow you to deal damage with the shield. By dealing damage with the shield, you deal impact damage to the target.

In this guide, we'll cover sword and shield mastery trees, recommended skills for different scenarios, and tips on how to optimize your sword and shield use.

Championship trees

The Sword and Shield mastery trees are made up of Master Sword and Protector trees.

Sword master

The Sword master tree focuses on dealing damage and is a good choice for both PvP and PvE. The three active abilities in this tree are Reverse stab, Spin Blade, and Leap Strike. Leadership is a key passive in this tree.

Reverse stab is a high-damage attack that deals 175% weapon damage to your target. When upgrading a skill you also gain grain making the attack unstoppable which is incredibly strong and when fully upgraded you will gain a skill cooldown reduction.

Spinning Blade is a spinning AoE ability that deals a decent amount of increased weapon damage to enemies within 2 yards. This ability also tears (reduces the target's armor) when upgraded, and reduces the cooldown for each enemy hit when fully upgraded. Decent damage, tear, and area of effect, making this skill a strong ability in most situations.

The last skill in the Sword master's tree is Leap Strike. When using Jumping Strike, you will jump 4 meters forward, and if you hit with this skill, you will hit the enemy with increased weapon damage. When upgraded, this ability can serve as an execution dealing 50% more damage to enemies below 30% health, and when fully upgraded it has some crowd control in the form of a slow if you hit the target in the back.

The passive key in this tree is called Leadership and increases the damage dealt by all members of your group by 10% while holding a sword.

Other passive skills in the Sword master tree focus mainly on dealing increased damage, passive skills increasing movement speed and those that impose a slowdown.

Protector

The Protector Tree focuses on using the shield to deal damage, control enemy control, and mitigate damage. The abilities of this tree, combined with strong shield blocking, make the sword and shield the best refueling weapons in the New World. The three active skills in this tree are Bash shield, Shield Charge, and Showdown. The passive key in this tree is called Defensive formation.

Bash shield is compatible with the taunt gems (causes a 6-second taunt to all enemies hit) and causes severe stuns on the enemy. When upgraded, this skill creates a much greater threat, making it a strong taunt option and extending the duration of the stun.

Another skill in the skill tree is Rush Shield. After you use it, you will throw 5 meters forward and knock back the enemy and deal increased weapon damage. The rush forwards makes it a decent option closer to the PvP loophole, and upgrades to this skill increase its use as a tank. After upgrading the skill, all enemies within 5 meters will weaken (reduce their damage) and slow down their action.

The last skill in the Protectors tree is Showdown. This ability is also compatible with Taunt Gems and will taunt all enemies within 8 meters for a 6 second taunt. The AOE taunt makes it a very strong refueling option, but that's not the only reason it's strong. When you activate Showdown, you will gain 30% damage reduction for 8 seconds, and after upgrading, you will receive an additional 20% damage reduction if your health is above 50%. In addition to the significant damage reduction you receive, you'll also get a nice self-healing effect when the skill ends once it's fully upgraded.

Final match is the strongest tank skill in the game, providing 50% damage reduction, self-healing, and area taunt.

The passive key in the defenders tree is defensive formation. This passive will reduce the damage dealt to all other allies within 2 yards by 30%. Another very strong option for you when you play the role of a tank.

The rest of the passive abilities in the tree focus mainly on additional damage reduction and increased threat generation, again making this a perfect tank setup.

Recommended roles and skills

The sword and shield are one of the more versatile weapons in the New World. It can be played as DPS or Tank and is a great option for PvP melee combat. Additionally, as mentioned earlier, Sword and Shield are the strongest tank options in the New World.

Tank

Recommended active abilities:

  • Bash shield
  • Rush Shield
  • Final match

Recommended passive skills:

  • Solid Shield
  • Elemental resistance
  • One with a shield
  • The last blow
  • A sturdy handle
  • Defensive training
  • Fortitude
  • Regeneration
  • High adhesion

Recommended passive key:

  • Defensive formation

You don't need to be creative when building your tank with your sword and shield. Active and passive abilities from the defender tree create an excellent set of tank skills.

There are 2 skills in this tree that are compatible with taunts, allowing you to maintain aggro with ease. Bash shield will mock all enemies hit, and Showdown is a nice AoE taunt when activated.

Bash shield not only causes taunts but also applies a nice stun to enemies hit, allowing your DPS to take effect.

Rush Shield also applies some crowd control, more importantly, this ability weakens all enemies within 5 yards, reducing their damage for a short time. The Rush Shield nerf effect makes this skill a good choice for a tank.

Showdown is one of the best tank skills in the New World. Not only does it apply a very nice AoE taunt when activated, but when fully upgraded, this ability will reduce damage taken by 50% while at full health. You will also get a very nice self-healing when the skill is over.

A key passive skill that you are going to adopt into your tank skill set is defensive formation. This passive ability is a very good choice for a tank in New World. When you block allies within 2 yards, their damage will be reduced by 30%

DPS

Much like the sword-and-shield tank role, there's no reason to be creative if you choose to use the sword as a DPS weapon. You are going to maximize the Sword masters Tree.

The passive wrench in this tree, combined with some strong damage-dealing abilities and the AoE effect that causes Rift, make it a viable choice for a DPS setup.

Recommended active abilities:

  • Reverse stab
  • Spinning Blade
  • Jumping Strike

Recommended passive skills:

  • Precision
  • Mobility
  • Opportunist
  • Trust
  • Enhanced Stab
  • Liberating Justice
  • Counterattack
  • Critical precision
  • Weak point

Recommended passive key:

  • Leadership

Reverse stab is a skill that deals high damage to a single target and, when fully upgraded, reduces the cooldowns of all swords by 25%. This ability also gains strength which will make it unstoppable when used. The cooldown reduction this skill provides will help your spinning blade reduce its cooldown faster, which in turn will allow you to smash your enemies more often.

Spinning Blade is a spinning attack that deals damage to all enemies within 2 meters. This ability also applies a Rend to all enemies hit, reducing their armor for a short time, and when fully upgraded, spinning blade's cooldown is reduced by 10% for each enemy hit.

This AoE Rend will allow your team to deal more damage, and by combining the Cooldown Reduction from Spinning Blade with the Reverse Thrust Cooldown Reduction, you'll be able to use your sword abilities frequently and, more importantly, you'll be able to apply Rend more frequently to weaken targets.

The last skill in the skill tree is Leap Strike. This is not an ideal skill for DPS. It doesn't deal almost as much damage as Reverse and has a slower animation. However, once fully updated, it can be useful as an execution on your DPS build.

The passive key, Leadership, increases the damage dealt by all party members by 10% while holding a sword. This key passive ability, coupled with the ability to apply AoE damage to your targets, makes the sword a decent option for DPS in the New World.

The remaining passive abilities in the tree are heavily focused on dealing more damage. One of the most important passives in the tree for the DPS skill set is Enhanced Stab. Enhanced Stab gives you a buff after a successful hit. Empower increases your damage for a short time.

Another important passive in the tree that is very useful for DPS is Liberating Justice, which will remove all debuffs from your character when you successfully perform a heavy attack.

Between applying Rift with Spinning Blade, dealing high damage with a reverse stab, you can weave Heavy Attacks to also buff the damage dealt and remove any nerfs you may have.

PvP

The skills you take in PvP will really depend on the type of role you want to play when engaging in PvP as well as the other weapons you will be carrying. The skills you take can also vary considerably depending on the type of PvP you engage in. For example, Siege, open-world PvP, 1vXing, etc.

The recommendation below is just one example of how you can tailor your build to suit your activity and playstyle. The following skills would be appropriate for small-scale open-world PvP.

For more information on specific builds for specific situations, see our builds section.

Recommended active abilities:

  • Reverse stab
  • Spinning Blade
  • Bash shield

Recommended passive skills:

  • Precision
  • Mobility
  • Opportunist
  • Trust
  • Enhanced Stab
  • Critical precision
  • Weak point
  • Solid Shield
  • The last blow

Recommended passive key:

  • Leadership

The idea behind this skill set is to apply a burst on a target, stun it, and then deal high damage with a reverse stab.

Spinning Blade deals extra weapon damage and tears your opponent apart, allowing you to deal more damage for a short time.

After applying rend, you can perform a stun with Bash shield which, when fully upgraded, will give you a very nice stun.

After being stunned, reverse stab your opponent to deal high damage. When upgraded, Reverse Strike also gains strength, making it unstoppable. This becomes very powerful in PvP as you can now deal damage without the threat of aborting your abilities. It's important to note that just because you won't be interrupted during an attack doesn't mean you won't take damage. You can still take damage from a hard attack.

With this set of passive skills, Achilles' Heel and Ultimate Strike will make the final swing of your 3 chain light attack much more powerful. This will slow down your target and the last light attack in the series will deal increased damage.

Dealing the final blow and getting the slow down is important because then it works well with the passive Opportunist. When the Opportunist is taken, you will deal increased damage to slowed targets.
So, between the Spinning Blade, Bash shield and Reverse Thrust combo, you should weave 3 light attack combinations as well as some heavy attacks to take advantage of the passive Empowered Push. Enhanced Stab will give you an Empowered buff that further increases your damage for a short time after performing a heavy attack.
