The ax deals slash damage with light attacks dealing 100% damage, your fourth (and final) attack chain light attacks will deal 105% damage, heavy attacks deal 120% damage, and your charged heavy attack deals 160% damage.

In this guide, we'll cover ax mastery trees, recommend skills for different scenarios, and suggest how to optimize your ax use.

Championship trees

Ax Championship trees consist of a Berserker Tree and a Throwing Tree.

Berserker

The berserker tree focuses on fast-paced melee play. The three active skills in this tree consist of Wild Rush, Berserk, and Raging torrent, and the passive key is Resist death.

Wild Rush is a sprint melee attack that allows you to leap forward a short distance and hit the target twice. The first hit deals 115% of your weapon damage, and if you hit the second hit, you deal 130% of your weapon damage, making this skill a powerful skill. As you progress in the Wild Fever skill, you will have the opportunity to use the ability to destroy and maim blows. These abilities will add finishing damage that deals 20% more damage to targets below 30% health, increasing the damage even more, and if you hit the target in the back you root the target, immobilizing it for 2 seconds.

Berserk is the basic ax skill. When you use this skill, it will trigger Frenzy for 15 seconds. While you're in a frenzy, ALL attack damage will be increased by 20%. VERY IMPORTANT: If you switch weapons after initiating berserk mode, the berserk mode will end. It does not transfer to your other weapon.

Berserk is also compatible with Taunt Gems, meaning you can equip a Carnelian Gem into an Ax Gem slot, and when you use the Berserk ability, it will taunt all enemies within 8 meters.

As you progress through the berserk skill, you'll also gain 20% berserk movement speed, gain some self-healing every 5 seconds in berserk mode, remove all crowd control upon activating the skill, and your attacks become uninterruptible when on a frenzy.

The third skill under the Berserker tree is Raging torrent. Activating this skill will perform 4 very quick attacks, each dealing 90% damage to your weapon. As you progress in this skill, you'll gain haste (20% increased movement speed) when you hit someone with a raging stream hit, and if you manage to face a light attack at the end of the skill, you'll be able to deal an additional attack that deals 120% weapon damage.

The passive key for the Berserker tree is called Resist death. When you take Resist death, you will be able to avoid dying once every 75 seconds. Upon taking damage that would kill you, you will be reduced to 50 HP instead and gain invulnerability for 3 seconds.

Passives in the Berserker Tree are heavily focused on increasing damage dealt, reducing cooldowns, and removing negative status effects on you when your health is below 30%.

Throwing

The throwing tree centers around mid-range ax throws that deal damage and debuff to your target. This tree is very focused on maintaining debuffs for added benefit when using a target skill with an existing debuff.

The three active skills in this tree are Excruciating throw, Social Distance, An infected throw, and the key liability in this tree is A permanent obstacle.

Excruciating throw deals a small amount of increased weapon damage to the target when hit, and also causes tear at the target for 10 seconds. Tear reduces your target's Damage Absorption by 10%. As you upgrade this skill, Rend becomes stronger if you hit a target more than 8 yards away, deals more damage if your target already has an active debuff, and also reduces the cooldown of the skill.

Social Distance is a skill that allows you to throw your ax and dodge backwards, creating distance between yourself and your opponent. If hit, it also deals increased weapon damage and slows the target. The first skill upgrade increases your movement speed for 3 seconds if you hit and the target already has an existing debuff. The last skill upgrade strengthens the slow effect, making it more effective.

The third skill in the Throwing tree is called An infected throw. If you hit with this throw, it deals 150% weapon damage and also inflicts both sickness and debuff on the target. Disease reduces the target's healing efficiency by 30%, and debuffing reduces the target's damage by 10%. When you upgrade this skill, you will extend the duration of the disease and weaken when the target is below 30% health, and the last upgrade creates a 3-meter sickness area on impact that lasts 3 seconds.

A key passive, A permanent obstacle, increases the duration of all Ax debuffs by 30% on successful throwing ax hits. This allows you to hit the target and maintain the debuff, so you can get the added perks mentioned above when hitting the target with the debuff already applied.

Recommended roles and skills

The recommended skills for an ax depend on what activity you are taking part in and what role you want to play in it. The ax can be effective as both a DPS weapon and a tank in PvE and is a great choice for PvP melee combat.

DPS
Recommended active abilities:

  • Berserk
  • Raging torrent
  • Excruciating throw

Recommended passive skills:

  • Furious strikes
  • Against all odds
  • Crazy Purges
  • Cumulative power
  • Unrelenting Fury
  • Strengthening Blows
  • Critical throw

Recommended passive key:

  • Resist death

A berserker is necessary for every ax build, especially a DPS build. The 20% increased damage is necessary for maximum damage. It is recommended to fully upgrade this skill to use all the abilities of the berserker. Not only do you get decent self-healing, the ability to remove crowd control effects during activation, and increased movement speed, but you'll also get the ability to use other abilities without interrupting them in berserk mode. This will help you get the maximum DPS effect with the ax.

Raging torrent pairs well with both the increased damage you will take from the Berserker and the tear that will be applied to your target after a burst roll, allowing this ability to pump out quite a bit of damage per second for a single target. It is recommended that this skill be fully upgraded to receive an extra hit from the raging torrent for maximum damage.
A rending throw is only taken for the affected rende. It is recommended that you only upgrade the second skill level, Targeted Strike, to increase the profitability of the skill. This will give you 1 more point that you should spend on the passive critical roll. Critical roll is taken because it increases the chance of a critical hit for all attacks.

When Berserk is activated a tear is applied, you can use your raging torrent for maximum damage.

Other recommended passive skills will help to greatly increase your damage and will work well with the recommended active skills allowing for maximum DPS.

Tank
Recommended active abilities:

  • Berserk
  • Excruciating throw
  • An infected throw

Recommended passive skills:

  • Crazy Purges
  • Strengthening Blows
  • A pointless refreshment
  • Refreshing throws
  • Boot and rally
  • Adrenaline rush

Recommended passive key:

  • A permanent obstacle

As a tank that uses an ax, you'll want to use the Berserk ability for a number of reasons. This is the only ax skill that is compatible with the gem taunts and will allow you to get some self-healing and remove debuffs that have been placed on you. It is recommended to fully upgrade the Berserk skill.

Excruciating throw is taken to be the Rend debuff that is applicable. This is treated as a tank support ability that will allow your squad to deal more damage to your targets. Fully upgrading this skill is recommended.
An infected roll is also taken as an applied debuff. Will inflict 2 debuffs on your target, disease, and debilitation. Disease will reduce the healing of your targets, and debilitating will reduce the damage dealt by enemies.

A key passive persistent handicap is adopted to allow you to maintain weaknesses on the target for extended periods of time to ensure maximum DPS and reduced target damage for the entire team.

The other passive skills recommended will help you reduce your skill cooldowns, gain fortification that will make you more durable against time, and the passive boot and raid will help you regenerate your stamina.

PvP
Recommended active abilities:

  • Berserk
  • Wild Rush
  • Excruciating throw

Recommended passive skills:

  • Furious strikes
  • Against all odds
  • Crazy Purges
  • Cumulative power
  • Unrelenting Fury
  • Strengthening Blows
  • Critical throw

Recommended passive key:

  • Resist death

The recommended skills for the PvP build are similar to the above mentioned DPS build, with the exception of Wild Rush override Raging torrent. Full Wild Rush upgrade is recommended.

Wild Rush will be hijacked by Raging torrent for the execution damage and CC it provides. Combined with the berserk speed boost, the quick dash that appears in Savage Rush can serve as a small gap in PvP combat.

This is a very aggressive PvP weapon. You can use the ax to deal tons of damage and keep putting pressure on the enemy. The Berserk ability grants you a movement speed boost as well as self-healing, so you can use it to fly around an enemy if needed, regain some health, and then jump back into the aggressive playstyle.
